Yes I've been reading about how this B16A motor is a good motor for boost compared to the b18 series..
My question is what are the feelings on the 89-91 series B16A motors? I've currently a 94 Coupe that I'm looking to build for boost.
I was wondering what you guys think about using the older 89-91 series b16a motor for boosting this thing. I was thinking about rewiring and using a Zdyne computer also.
Also, would you reccomend a LS tranny for this? I'm going to purchase a Drag III kit for this setup. But I'm starting to think maybe a GS-R setup would churn more power and better times. Even though it's not as superior a motor, it's making more hp and torque, and my friends motors have faired well under boost up to 10 psi.
What do you guys think?

There is a lot of info on 1st gen B16A motors on http://hybrid.honda-perf.org
It is not advised to use an older 89-91 B16A in a newer 92+ civic due to the fact that the older motors had a cable clutch and your car has a hydraulic clutch tranny. Besides, the newer B16A motors have more horsepower than the older versions anyway. If you can find a newer B16A motor that would be the way to go.

The plan was to use a hydro tranny like the LS..etc I was just gonna use the b16a cause they're cheap and pretty easy to find...
Getting the b16a to work in my car would be no problem...

ther's always the B17 motor. not quite as good of rod/stroke ratio as the newer B16A but definately better than the B18 engines.

Or if you rebuild your motor you can improve the Rod/Stroke ratio on the B18C motor which will help tremendously

it's not that easy to raise the rod storke ratio on a b18c block ... so far Honda is the only person who has matched the close to perfect 1.74:1 ratio int he Civic Type R by using the b18c block and destroking to 1.6 liters.
In order to keep 1.8Liters of displacement and get a longer rod stroke ration, you'd have to customize the block by attaching more deck ... the other way is to overbore, however the maximum allowable bore before hitting coolang passage sleeve would only result 1.7liters using the 1.6liter crank and rod.

The 1st gen b16 is the best bang for the buck if you can get the wiring correct and use the correct ecu it would be fine but you would have to loom the older connectors in for the 88-91 b16 so that that series ecu will plug up if not the newer ecu will be throwing a bunch of codes to do with emissions etc..
The sir2 b16 and sir1 b16 handle boost just as good.. the 92-95 sirII motors have a 10.4 to 1 comp ratio so it is a tad higher than the 10.2 to 1 of the first gen b16's I would recommend a J&S Safeguard on either one while boosting it or running a higher comp ratio than stock, for ease of install I would go with the newer of the two motors.
The reason that a stock b16 can handle more boost than a stock b18c is because the b16 has a more favorable rod to stroke ratio (1.74) which means the piston is not pushing on the cylinder walls as much, the power is coming down more directly on the crank rather than on the side of the combustion chamber, so pound for pound the b16a will always (under the same circumstances) out boost a b18 series motor built to the hilt or not...

Just use the b16, the gains would be minisquel with all the trouble you would go through, under boost that is, the 1.74 ratio is already there from the factory, why go through all the trouble?
just crank the boost knob a few clicks.
